The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on August 07, 2026, issued the Draft Food Safety and Standards (Safe Food and Balanced Diets for Children in School) Amendment Regulations, 2026, further amending the 2020 Regulations.
The following has been stated:
The draft seeks to prescribe specific thresholds for food products considered “high in added fat or added sugar or sodium”, based on the Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024, issued by ICMR.
Under the proposed amendment, food would be classified as high in added fat where it contains more than 4.2 g/100 g in solid form or 1.5 g/100 ml in liquid form. Food would be considered high in added sugar where it contains more than 3 g/100 g in solid form or 2 g/100 ml in liquid form.
For salt, food would be considered high where it contains more than 0.625 g/100 g in solid form or 0.175 g/100 ml in liquid form.
The draft regulations will be considered after 60 days from the date the Gazette is made available to the public. Objections and suggestions may be submitted to the Chief Executive Officer, FSSAI, within the specified period.
